Self-Managers Celebrate Christmas!

The Self-Managers at JNES had their annual Christmas party last week. They made ornaments and picture frames and did other Christmas crafts.  They also ate pizza at their after-school shindig. The Self-Managers are students who filled out an application which includes a personal essay, a parent nomination form and a teacher recommendation form. Students in the program come to school ready to learn with their homework done. They obey school rules and they are helpful and respectful. Self-Managers get several rewards for making wise choices. The teacher advisers for the program are Cathy McConnell and Sue West.

NANA Provides Backpacks to all the students in the Region!

NANA President, Marie Green and NANA Board Member, Dood Lincoln, presented backpacks to all the students at JNES today! The NANA Board wanted to do something for the students in the region to show their support for all their hard work and efforts at school so they will be handing out backpacks at all the schools in the region.  The fifth grade students in Ms. Jurs’ class were thrilled with their packs and wore them at their desks the rest of the afternoon!

JNES Food Drive is a Huge Success!

Students at June Nelson Elementary School responded with generous donations of food when the Student Council challenged classes with a contest to see which class could bring in the most food for hungry families in Kotzebue. The winning class was Mrs. Kombol’s second grade with 402 items. They will get a pizza and slushy party from the Student Council. Second place was Ms. Jurs’ fifth grade class with 332 items. They will get slushies. Third place was Mrs. Hulley’s first graders with 268 items.  They will get a popcorn party. The whole school donated 2,485 food items!! The tables in the library were overflowing with food.  It was given to local churches that have food closets for people in need. Way to go kids!
